At least 125 people have been killed and dozens injured in a riot and stampede at an Indonesian soccer stadium.

Thousands of Arema FC fans stormed the pitch at Canjurohan Stadium after their team lost 3-2 to Persabaya Surabaya, East Java Provincial Police said. The police tried to control the “riot” by firing tear gas and causing a stampede as panicked fans rushed to the exit gates.
Some were suffocated in the chaos and others were crushed to death. At least 34 people died in the stadium, including two policemen.
The death toll has been reduced to 125, according to East Java Deputy Governor Emil Dardak, who said some names were listed twice. Officials previously put the number at 174.

Fan violence is an ongoing problem in Indonesia, as strong rivalries between clubs sometimes lead to fan violence. Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya are old rivals and fans of the latter were not allowed to buy tickets for Saturday’s game due to fears of violence.
Indonesia’s Minister of Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, said the organizers ignored the authorities’ recommendation to hold the game in the afternoon instead of the evening. Soccer’s world governing body FIFA states in its safety rules that stewards or police should not carry or use firearms or “crowd control gas.” East Java police did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether they were aware of such regulations.
