When you delete a file in Windows, you can always recover it, even if it’s no longer in the Recycle Bin. Third-party data recovery tools are available, but they can be expensive. As an alternative, Microsoft provides a command-line utility called Windows File Recovery to restore deleted files. Available from the Microsoft Store, this app supports Windows 10 and Windows 11 with the May 2020 Update.

The program supports FAT, NTFS and exFAT file systems. FAT and exFAT are used for SD cards, flash drives and USB drives with a storage capacity of less than 4 GB. NTFS is commonly used for mechanical drives, SSDs, external hard drives, flash drives, and USB drives larger than 4 GB.

The initial version of Windows File Recovery, released in summer 2020, offers three recovery modes: Basic, Segmented, and Signature, each targeting a specific situation. The version released in Winter 2021 reduces the options to two modes as a way to simplify the program.

As a command-line tool, Windows File Recovery is certainly trickier to use than traditional GUI applications. However, if you know the steps and are comfortable working from the command prompt, you can use this utility to bring back files that appear to be permanently lost.
If you’re using Windows 10, make sure you’re running the May 2020 Update (Windows 10 2004) or higher. To check, go to Settings > System > About and scroll down to the Windows Specifications section. If the version number says 2004 or higher, you’re ready.

You can specify a different folder for your files, but we’ll use the default option. Also, if there are spaces in the folder or file name, you must enclose the full path in quotation marks:

As you enter the command, the tool prompts you to continue. Type Y and Windows File Recovery will scan the drive for deleted files. If the file exists, the app will try to recover it. If successful, put it in your app.

The recovery folder and RecoveryLog.txt file are immediately displayed on the destination drive. Drill down into the folder under Recovery until you see the recovered files. Open the file to make sure it is empty and readable.
