Page Not Found And How To Fix It

A 404 status code (Not Found) indicates that the origin server either did not find the current proxy for the target resource or is unwilling to indicate that it exists. The 404 status code does not indicate that this lack of representation is temporary or permanent. If a 410 (Gone) status code is preferred over 404, it means the status may be permanent if the origin server is aware of the assumption through some configuration.

404 Error Message Not Found is also unique because most websites create their own page to resolve the error rather than displaying one of the above messages. Some WordPress themes also include custom 404 pages by default. For that reason, many websites use funny or creative 404 pages instead so you won’t see the error message at all.

Not having a 404 error has a negative impact on SEO. But it can have negative effects depending on the cause of the error.

For example, if a visitor types a wrong URL and sees a 404 error – it will not have a negative impact on SEO. But if you make a personal mistake because the URL is broken, it hinders Google’s ability to crawl your site properly and thus has a negative impact on SEO.

Additionally, if permalink problems cause 404 errors across websites, Google will not be able to crawl any content on your site. On the other hand, always fix your 404 error as soon as possible.

Most people don’t know this, but websites that generate multiple 404 errors can easily run into performance issues because these responses are usually not cached. We see a lot of stuff like this on big sites and it can be a big problem if you accidentally post or if the virus traffic gets to 404 pages. To minimize the impact of 404 requests on website performance, we automatically cache 404 pages for 15 minutes. If you create a new page with the same URL as the cached 404 page, we automatically clear the cache so your visitors see the new page immediately. This means your website is protected from PHP and CPU spikes caused by traffic to dynamic 404 pages.

The best way to fix this is to automatically redirect someone trying to access the old location to the new location. That way they will bring it to the right place without the 404 error. By default WordPress tries to redirect the changed / moved content. But it doesn’t always work and you shouldn’t rely on WordPress for this functionality. But don’t worry, there are many easy ways to install redirects in WordPress:
