Over the past few months we’ve seen quite a few Lenovo workstations, starting with the entry-level P300 and moving up to the mid-range P500 range. Overall, we found both of these powerful workstations that can get the job done.

We now have a high-performance P900 in the lab, and we’re ready to put it to the test. The P900 offers serious power and performance built around Lenovo’s modular, device-free design. We’ve seen this modular design in other workstations, but this time it’s built to handle challenging dual-processor configurations.

Lenovo has packed fully customizable storage, memory, graphics, power and I/O configuration into the P900. The P900 also includes advanced deployment services, making it easy to load custom images and default tagging for enterprise business class support.

Dual-processor based workstations offer a lot of processing power, and with that power you need a high-end video card; The P9000 can pack three high-end GPUs or Tesla cards to meet this requirement. Such a system will work to handle large files, the P900 can handle up to 24TB of storage and can run the OS on an SSD boot drive to make this system very responsive.

The shipping box is filled with a large foam insert to protect the workstation, and there is enough clearance to protect the workstation from anything that might bump the box. An accessory insert includes the power cord, mouse, documentation, and DVD. You will find the keyboard attached to the side of the shipping box.

The side of the P900 has a locking level to prevent unauthorized access to the interior of the case. This part of the case is very smooth, and the surface has a nice matte finish, so it doesn’t get all fingerprints when handled.

On the top of the case, at the ether end, there are two bumps that provide handles for lifting the P900. We found this useful as the P900 was not a light machine; These handles make it easy to move the P900 around. We’ve worked with many other workstations of this type and weight, and so far, the P900 is the only one that has this feature.

On the back of the P900, we see the same black honeycomb mesh that we saw on the front. Located here are two slots for the side panel to hold the lock key. Here we can clearly see the split configuration of the PCIe bay with one video card on top and two on the bottom.

Here we’ve removed the side panel to take a look at the P900’s inner workings. As we’ve seen with other Lenovo workstations, an air cooling shroud runs down the middle of the case and separates the accessory card base. This configuration gives us room for one PCIe video card at the top and two at the bottom.

New Lenovo systems are designed to minimize the work required to make and upgrade functionality. Each of the red touch points you see here are locations that can be removed. No tools are required to remove these components. The only things requiring a screwdriver were removing the CPU heat sink.

The air cover, or as Lenovo calls it, the direct cooling air baffle, can be removed to access the CPU and RAM area. This new thermal design by Lenovo reduces the number of fans needed, and helps reduce noise.

Here we have removed the direct cooling air baffle so you can see the CPU and RAM area. On the back of the case is a removable fan that draws air through the system and sends it to the rear to cool the area. Each CPU has its own heat sink with additional fans for cooling.

Looking at the CPU heat sinks here, we can see that each heat sink has its own fan for cooling. These heat sinks are comparable to many we’ve seen in our other reviews, and provide enough cooling for the CPU on their own. The programs we choose to remove reflect our personal preferences; These are good results, and you can decide whether to keep them or not. PowerDVD is required on the P900, so it will stay. We found the Lenovo software very useful, so let’s see what Lenovo has done to make it easier for us to manage the P900.
