Right now there is an exploit out there. This can happen for any number of applications. In this particular example, I’ll be dealing with Java. This has been exploited for Acrobat and other types of applications. If you are a customer, you have the fire extinguisher for the next problem. This video will show you exactly how you would set this up if you were the customer.
With that in mind, let’s make sure I actually have Java. What I’m going to do is go to “Control Panel” on this example machine and go to “java” here. Let’s go ahead and go to the “Java” tab and click on “View…”. You will see here that I went the extra mile. I actually installed Java “1.6” and “1.7” and you can see that here. What if you have two versions of Java installed? What are you going to do then? Let’s fix all these problems in one fell swoop by providing the fix to “Disable” Java here.

Let’s make sure it actually works and I’m not pulling a fast one on you. What I will do is I will first go to “Internet Explorer” and run “java test”. Let’s see if Java works properly in the two main browsers here. This is a “java test”. “How do I test if Java works on my computer?” This is the type of prompt a user will receive. He would click Run and sure enough Java works.
We’ll go to “Firefox” and “test java”. See. does he work here Yes. You can see, Java registers and works. You can see that it lists the Java version right there and it lists the Java version right there.

Now that we’re here, let’s get into some other settings here. For example, I’d also like to disable “Create Shortcuts” and also “Block this setting using system-wide configuration file” so users can’t work around it. I will do the same for “Java Console”. All we have to do is wait for the group policy to be updated. We’ll use “gpupdate” to do that here. Now that we’re done, let’s first switch to “java” here and see what happened. Let’s go to “Advanced” and you can see here those settings that we specifically set to “Never allow” and “Don’t launch console”, plus we blocked those features so that users can’t fix this.
Let’s go to the “Java” tab and go to “View…” and you can see here that both of these markers are now disabled. If we tried restarting Internet Explorer and switching to the “java test” – we’ll run it here – you’d get nothing, which is exactly what you need in this emergency. Just to give you a good idea, like I said, it comes with tons of pre-configured packages for all kinds of situations. It’s not the first time, and it certainly won’t be the last time, that a vendor — or, in this case, the Department of Homeland Security — will recommend that you disable a certain app or checkbox that would imply some kind of threat vector.
With that in mind, I hope this gives you some insight into how you can resolve your issue immediately as the seller deals with the issue, which can take days, weeks, or sometimes months.

We’ve had a few questions about how to handle and handle Java with all the crap that came out in January 2013. If I give some administrative rights here, you can see what happens. This will be gray. This is all well and good, but again a user would need administrative rights to handle this. It is very difficult and not very popular.
