Chromebooks can be kid-friendly again. Google adds Chrome OS support for Family Link, the parental control service for Android. The move, first reported by Chrome Unboxed, comes months after Google ditched supervised users in January, promising to add improved parental controls in the future.

Now that the company has made its promise, let’s see how you can turn it off.

How To Set Up Chromebook Parental Controls

To get started, you need a Chromebook running Chrome OS 65 and up, and a Family Link account for each child under 13 who wants to use the computer. If your child doesn’t already have a Family Link account, download and install the Family Link app on iOS or Android, then follow the instructions to create an account.

Once your child’s account information is available, add a new user to the Chromebook by selecting on the Chromebook’s lock screen. Use your child’s Family Link credentials to sign in to the Chromebook. You will be asked to sign in to the parent account associated with Family Link for verification. A prompt similar to the one above explains what your child has access to and, perhaps more importantly, what is blocked.

Once the account is connected, your child can use the Chromebook with some restrictions. Access to the Chrome Web Store and Play Store is blocked, as well as incognito mode in Chrome. Websites with sexual or violent content are also blocked.

Unfortunately, Family Link integration does not currently support time limits, remote device tracking, or location support, all features currently available on Android.

Google provides detailed information on what a parent or child can and cannot do on a Chromebook using the new Family Link feature on its support page.

Hopefully more controls aren’t too far off, it would be nice to have screen time limits on Chromebooks.

Is the Mac still important? Apple executives explain why the MacBook Pro has been in production for more than four years and why we should care. A special note for any virtual learning situation (changes made to Chromebooks during the pandemic):

We believe that proper protection of a Chromebook requires multiple layers.

5 Layers of Chromebook Protection (click on each to go directly to the one you need, but it’s helpful to go through them in order):

Note. Each of these 5 tiers applies to both school and personal Chromebooks. We’ll do our best to explain how each layer affects each type of Chromebook.

They use their own technology. We have strong views on controlling where children use their technology. For example, we will keep all Internet-ready devices out of bedrooms at night, where children are at greater risk and sleep is constantly disturbed. During a virtual school, using a Chromebook during the day could be very necessary because the bedroom is also the child’s study room.

But even if they aren’t using it for anything that dangerous, many kids have been known to hide their devices under their covers and play games late at night. With games like Minecraft (now on Chromebooks) and stealth internet browser games, keeping devices out of bedrooms at night is critical.

Just know that the combination of boredom, bedrooms, and darkness (Toxic Trio – watch the webinar!) can be a tempting place to make poor digital choices (whether you’re 14 or 40!).

The router is the most important piece of digital hardware in the house! And it is often overlooked. We joke that routers are the champions of social distancing in technology. But use this part of your internet security plan properly! You are responsible for every digital click on your home network, so be sure to check your router.

– Children will receive a school email to log into their Chromebook. This school email is connected to the school’s Google Suite, which allows the school to control many features, including social media blocking, known porn domains, etc. Whether your child is connected to your router at home or Wi-Fi at a friend’s home, logging in with their school email will follow these School Google Suite “rules”.

The problem occurs when the Chromebook allows “guests” to use the Chromebook with Gmail accounts that do NOT meet the rules. Ownership of a Chromebook is at Layer 3. Continue! You have it!

The school may have set itself as the owner of the device. This means that the school has full control over the device. This can be good or bad. But how to determine if the school is the owner or not?

#1 – Watch this video. If you see “Only the owner can change these settings” as shown in the video, it probably means that the school is the owner. I recommend emailing the IT person to confirm that yes, the school owns the device.

2. If the school is the owner, we need to make sure the school has “Enable Guest Browsing” turned off. In the video you can see it is ON (which is what we don’t want). Otherwise, anyone with a Gmail account can use the device. This is where you contact the school and ask them to exclude it.

This next screenshot shows what we want to see – “Enable Guest Browsing” is OFF and “Restrict Login” is ON for only the Gmail accounts you want to use with the device.

Again, if the school is the owner that limits your control, but none of these buttons are as shown below, it’s time to contact the school and ask questions.

Make a parent the owner of the Chromebook. The first user to set up a Chromebook becomes the “owner” of the Chromebook and can set special privileges. It is similar to the “administrator” of the Windows environment.

The parent must be the “master”. If the student is set as an owner and a parent wants to change it, do a factory reset and start the setup process. No harm done.

On your Chromebook, turn off OVERTURN GUEST. The “owner” must turn off guest browsing. This is important because Chromebooks don’t save web history for guest browsing, so it’s easy to hide web activity.

How do I turn off guest mode on my Chromebook? (again, if the school is the owner, they can only disable guest browsing):

Note. If you don’t restrict guest browsing, anyone can use the Internet by clicking the Browse as Guest icon in the lower left corner. Not only that, but the Chromebook won’t save your web history. It’s like using the device in incognito mode, where the activity can be hidden. Also, the “Restrict sign-in to the following users” feature is only temporarily turned off, so you can add your child’s Family Link Gmail account below.

By taking these steps at Layer 3, you’ll ensure that only the right people can access and make changes to your Chromebook.

But if you don’t have a router with parental controls, you’ll want to set up clean DNS on your device (please consider getting a Gryphon, it’s that good).

How To Restrict Content On Google/android

Whether you have a school-owned or personal device, forcing clean DNS on all WiFi networks that your Chromebook can use is a great “belt and hangers”, double layer of protection. That way, even if for some reason the device is being used by a guest Gmail account, it will still be subject to pure DNS blocking.

Note. You must perform these steps for each WiFi network you use on your Chromebook. This should route all your internet traffic through this CLEAN nameserver, preventing access to most unwanted content. Unfortunately, these clean DNS settings can’t be blocked, but they’re obscure enough that most kids won’t know to look for them.

Sequence is important. It seems like a huge list, but you can do it! One step at a time.

Note. Family Link alone is not good enough to remove censored content from your device. That’s why we insist so much on CleanBrowsing.

If you are not using CleanBrowsing and want to block inappropriate content, you need to open all non-Google search engines: Family Link app -> “Settings” -> “Google Chrome Filters” -> “Manage Sites” -> Block List. Otherwise, it’s pornography
