After a Level 4 scan, the utility then runs a “Level 5” scan on the partition and looks for bad groups on the disk. When this analysis is complete, the utility shows how many white groups have been completed and the status of the scan.
After chkdsk has finished scanning, the utility shows the details of what it found and what status to do if it works. Below is a summary of the disk scan that found no errors.
Now that we’ve covered the basic use of the chkdsk utility, it’s time to learn how to use the utility on the Windows System OS disk. We have seen that chkdsk will not run on a booted Windows System C: partition / volume unless / until the computer is restarted. You may have noticed at this point that chkdsk works on individual partitions on the disk. A Windows System OS disk formatted as a GPT disk, like most modern Windows installations, may have multiple partitions on the disk. The fact is that disk corruption can occur in any disk partition. The error may be in more than one partition on one disk as well. Additionally, Windows System disks may have partitions on disks that are not driver-assigned which makes using the chkdsk utility for their work more difficult.

To get started, let’s take a look at the correct installation of Windows 10 on a GPT formatted disk using Windows Disk Management.

It is possible to use the Windows Disk Management tool to assign a drive letter to this partition. To do this, place your mouse cursor on the partition where you want to put the letters and left click there. You will notice that the partition background takes the hash as shown below.

You can see that Disk Management cannot complete the driver task. When you select a distribution as listed above and right click, you can see a small box with the word Help. Another problem that occurs is that the options to change drivers and Paths are grayed out and therefore not selected. There could be many reasons for this. One of the most common reasons is that the partition type is not NTFS or FAT32. In this case, the only way to solve the problem is to delete the Volume and update it.
