How To Make Decorated Cookies
Once the dough is ready, put it in the fridge to set. Then print out the free downloadable cookie template and cut out the faces with scissors.
Icing For Biscuits (royal Icing)
Roll out the chilled cookie dough to 1/4 inch thickness on a sheet of parchment paper. (Use plenty of flour to make sure it doesn’t stick.) Next, transfer the entire dough-covered parchment sheet to a large baking sheet and place in the freezer for about 10 minutes.
Now you can place the template on the dough, trace it with the tip of the knife, and cut it out. Remove the excess dough and place the cookie tops back in the freezer to keep them nice and crisp while baking.
Here, but if you want tips on how to make and bake great, ready-to-decorate cookies, you can check out Bernard’s video series on making, rolling, cutting, and baking.
Ways To Decorate Cookies With Royal Icing
Before decorating, otherwise the frosting will spoil. If you have to bake and decorate on the same day, let the cookies cool to the touch on a wire rack, then cool quickly in the freezer (about 10 minutes).
Bake the cookies a week in advance and freeze in a ziplock bag until you’re ready to decorate.
Start with a basic royal icing recipe mixed in a clean glass or metal bowl. (Fat can spoil the frosting, so you want your bowl to be free of residue.) Mix the royal icing to the consistency of cake frosting and set aside.

You will thin it by mixing in the smallest amount of water and using a knife or spatula through the glaze. When filling for 20 seconds, it is the right consistency. If it is too thick, add a little water and stir again. Too skinny? Add a little powdered sugar.
Adding too much water will make the frosting runny. A spray bottle will allow you to control the amount of water to get the right consistency.
We used plain white royal icing and added a little gel food coloring to create different shades of chocolate.
The Modern Proper
You will notice that the color palette is very simple due to #aesthetics. For more options, check out this post on food coloring ratios for different skin tones or this one to get the color of your choice.
We’ve provided sketches to show you different ways to experiment with hair, noses, and textures. But we don’t know your family – you do. So play!
For larger areas like hair and beard, outline first with royal icing, then fill in. If there are gaps, you can use a toothpick to move the icing around.

If you want some size, let the first color dry completely (about 2 hours) and then apply another thinned glaze on top. (If you add frosting to wet frosting, it will even out in one layer.)
Once the royal icing has completely dried, you can gently stack the cookies. Or Put it up and give it away! Or eat directly.

But over the years of work and wedding planning, I’ve forced myself to “feel the fear and do something about it.” This has paid off quite a bit as I am no longer petrified at the thought of decorating some cookies. And I even asked my son to make cookies (did you see how he helped me make bread on my Instagram story?) 😊
