This concept can be difficult for children. I would like to show you below how I teach equivalent fractions to my 3rd grade students.

The interactive notebook is perfect for introducing concepts and keeping them as a reference guide in math notebooks.

I like to use the Google Classroom resource as a math center. There is absolutely no preparation for the teacher. you simply assign students and then they complete on their own. They are good to use after the introductory lesson.

Lesson Video: Equivalent Fractions On A Number Line

Equivalent fractions are fractions that do not have the same numerator and denominator but have the same value.

Think pie (delicious treats always make fractions better). Do you want to take home half of the pie or 3 of the 6 total? It wouldn’t do anything, it’s the same thing. The numbers may be completely different, but the actual amount is similar or the same.

Want an easy introductory lesson? Use the pie example above. Make a quick t-chart and write “1/2 pie” and “3/6 pie”. Give students a post-it note and have them place it next to the board for the piece of their choice. You’ll quickly have several students look at the board and tell you they can’t make a choice…because the two amounts are the same. BINGO!

Finding Equivalent Fractions

I wanted to break down the concepts your students need to know to fully understand equivalent fractions and what they are. If your students master the following concepts, they will master equivalent fractions.

Quick tip: Any fraction equal to 1 has the same numerator and denominator. Any fraction equal to 1/2 has a numerator half the value of the denominator.

This may take some practice to get children to the point where they recognize these two fractions at hand. It will happen. just practice, practice, practice.

Often students can just look at the pictures and immediately know if the fractions are equivalent. However, it is more difficult when numerical fractions are used instead of a picture. Read below how students can find equivalent fractions mathematically.

Below I’ll show you some methods you can use to teach students how to find equivalent fractions and how to check that a fraction is indeed equivalent.

Fractions Part 6: Adding And Subtracting Fractions

A math coach and math INTERVENTION help children with near-failing grades in 4th grade understand math.

It’s no secret that, until the last few years, math in the US has always been about memorizing procedures and algorithms. If you were really good at memorizing all kinds of math problems, then this probably worked for you. It actually worked for me, I got A’s in math until 4th grade. When things went wrong, it was devastating to me as a student. I attended one school in 3rd grade and then transferred to another school in 4th grade. When I moved, I missed something about fractions along the way…but I didn’t know what it was at the time. Suddenly I was adding and subtracting fractions with odd denominators (numbers I’d never seen written that way before) and it made absolutely no sense to me. I still remember when I was handed assignments full of red marks, thinking I couldn’t believe I was bad at math and that I was bad at fractions. The assignments (and tears) piled up and I got a “D”. Shame.

When I look back and think about what I missed, it is clear to me. I had never researched or known there was such a thing as a matching faction. That I didn’t know it wasn’t a whole number for one thing, and that I didn’t know two fractions could be the SAME number. How can two numbers be equal? 7 was 7…21 was 21. How can 1/2 be the same number as 4/8?

How To Find Equivalent Fractions

So when I got together with my 4th grade teacher at my school, we decided to spend a lot of time on fraction equivalence. And we decided to make it as real world as possible. So we created an inquiry statement knowing that they already had some experience with equivalent fractions in 3rd grade…and told them they needed tools to prove their point.

Then we left them with measuring cups and sand, fraction tiles, fraction towers, chopsticks, pie charts and asked them to see what they could spot.

It was truly an amazing thing. As we walked around, we asked them what they noticed about the numbers. They started figuring out the relationship between the two numbers without us even saying a word.

Comparing Fractions (hands On Practice W/ 17 Examples!)

We talked about which ones are equal and which ones are not. We added a few more to the chart and figured out how we can actually use multiplication or division to determine equality if we don’t have the tools with us.

There were definitely misunderstandings in the room when we were working. These were noted and then cleaned up as we continued through the rest of the block during the week.
