The applet no longer works. I went to http://www.java.com to check the Java version in Internet Explorer and the java page said:

Since the applet works as expected in other browsers, I can assume that the problem is not the applet or its files/processes, but rather the configuration of JRE 7u51 with IE 11. I would like to know if there is a solution for this.

As an additional measure, I used the java.com tool to remove an earlier and unstable JRE version (using Google Chrome). After checking IE 11, I can see the Java plugins used and changed for 7u51:

I know IE is improved; however, we encourage our customers to use Google Chrome or Firefox, as these browsers are known to be more compatible with our web applications. Unfortunately, we cannot force our customers to use any browser due to the usual configuration restrictions regarding the use of software, etc.

The screenshot below shows Internet Explorer 11 with compatibility view set to “java.com”. It does not solve the problem in this case.
