Microsoft Edge brings a faster, more secure and more modern web experience than Internet Explorer. Additionally, Microsoft Edge with Internet Explorer mode (“IE mode”), is the only browser with built-in compatibility for legacy IE-based sites and apps.
As announced today, Microsoft Edge with IE mode has officially replaced the Internet Explorer 11 desktop application in Windows 10. Therefore, the Internet Explorer 11 desktop application will be discontinued on June 15, 2022 for some versions of Windows. 10.

Windows 10 LTSC and Windows Server markets are out of scope (not affected) for this change. Windows Server 2022 and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 are still unlimited.

IE will be retired in two phases to ensure a quality retirement. In the first phase, the migration phase, devices will be migrated from IE to Microsoft Edge over the coming months after June 15, 2022. Following industry best practices, this progressive migration will be quality driven to ensure a smooth IE11 retirement for you. and your organization. In order to reduce the level of business interruption that may occur in the organization each time, not all devices will be redirected at the same time. This method is designed so that you can identify and fix possible problems, such as missed locations, before all devices in your organization are transferred. The goal is for the transition phase for all devices with the Windows platform that are on the horizon for IE retirement to be completed in the next few months.
Note: Windows Update is not used to redirect devices during redirection. We do not recommend skipping Windows Update as it contains important operating system security patches.
The second phase of retirement is the Windows Update phase. After the redirection process is complete, IE will be permanently disabled through future Windows updates on all devices with Windows platforms that are in scope for IE retirement. It will follow the standard Windows update process as part of the optional “C” preview release followed by the “B” Patch released Tuesday. Due to the cumulative nature of Windows updates, disabling IE will persist in future Windows updates.

Being on an unsupported version of Windows 10 will not prevent migration – IE11 desktop applications will be migrated to Microsoft Edge across supported and unsupported versions of Windows 10.

If you are an organization, the next step is to determine if your organization has dependencies on legacy browsers. Support for IE mode follows the lifecycle of current and future Windows clients, Windows servers, and Windows IoT releases (including Windows 11) at least through 2029. Additionally, Microsoft will provide one year notice before ending the IE mode experience when the time comes. Windows support dates are noted on the Product Lifecycle page. Some versions of Windows may require an ESU license, if available, to receive operating system security updates beyond the support date.
