The future of Internet Explorer (“IE”) in Windows 10 lies with Microsoft Edge. What does this mean for businesses, IT administrators, developers and end users? Microsoft Edge gives you a faster, safer and more modern web experience than Internet Explorer. Additionally, Microsoft Edge in Internet Explorer Mode (“IE Mode”), is the only browser with built-in compatibility for legacy IE-based sites and applications.
As announced today, Microsoft Edge in IE mode officially replaces the Internet Explorer 11 desktop app on Windows 10. As a result, the Internet Explorer 11 desktop application will lose support and be retired on June 15, 2022 for some versions of Windows. 10.

The IE will retire in two phases to ensure a quality driven pension. In the first phase, the diversion phase, devices will be gradually redirected from IE to Microsoft Edge over the next few months after June 15, 2022. Following industry best practices, this progressive diversion will be quality driven to ensure consistency. IE11 rest for you and your company. To reduce the amount of potential business disruption within an organization at the same time, not all devices are redirected at the same time. This approach is designed to quickly identify and resolve potential issues, such as lost sites, before all devices in your organization are redirected. The aim is for the migration phase to be completed in the next few months for all devices with Windows operating systems that intend to retire IE.
Note: Windows Updates are not used to redirect devices during the redirect phase. We do not recommend skipping Windows updates as they contain important operating system security patches.
The second phase of the recall is the Windows Update phase. After the deprecation phase is over, IE will be permanently disabled by a future Windows Update on all devices running Windows operating systems where IE is intended to be retired. It will follow the standard Windows Update process as part of the optional Preview “C” release, followed by the Patch Tuesday “B” release. Due to the cumulative nature of Windows updates, disabling IE will continue with subsequent Windows updates.

We highly recommend that you use the Disable IE policy in your own environment in your catalog so that you can control disabling IE permanently.
Being on an unsupported version of Windows 10 does not prevent redirection – the IE11 desktop app will redirect to Microsoft Edge on both supported and unsupported versions of Windows 10.
Additionally, IE11 is not supported on unsupported versions of Windows 10 (such as Windows 10, versions 1909 and 2004).

We do not recommend that customers use unsupported versions of Windows 10 on their enterprise devices. We recommend that customers switch to supported versions of Windows 10 or Windows 11 and set Microsoft Edge to Internet Explorer mode (IE mode).

No, the Internet Explorer 11 desktop app is not available on Windows 11. Microsoft Edge is the default browser for Windows 11. The MSHTML engine is part of the Windows 11 platform to enable IE mode in Microsoft Edge. If your organization has legacy browser dependencies, you should disable IE mode in Microsoft Edge before upgrading to Windows 11 to avoid business disruptions. Good! You already have a browser that’s faster, more secure, and more modern than Internet Explorer, and you’ve completed a few steps to help with your migration. If you are an organization, the next steps are to determine if your organization has legacy browser dependencies. To enable legacy browser support in Microsoft Edge, you must disable Internet Explorer mode. Learn more and read the getting started guide on our Internet Explorer Mode webpage.
IE mode support follows the lifecycle of current and future Windows clients, Windows Server, and Windows IoT releases (including Windows 11) through at least 2029. Additionally, Microsoft will provide a one-year notice before retiring the IE Mode experience when the time comes. Windows support dates are documented on the Product Lifecycle page. Some versions of Windows may require an ESU license to receive operating system security updates beyond the support dates.
If support for a version of Windows ends before 2029, support for IE mode will also end for that version of Windows. To continue using IE mode, switch to a supported version of Windows.
