Can You Find Your Birth Certificate Online

Can You Find Your Birth Certificate Online – In this week’s blog post I write about my experience with the ‘General Register Office Online Search Index’ via their website. The GRO Index Reference is an important reference that is required to request an official copy of a birth, death or marriage certificate and the website offers a birth and death index search facility, although no records are currently available from the marriage index.

Birth indexes are available from 1837 to “100 years ago” and 1984 to 2004. Death records are available from 1837 to 1957 and 1984 to the current year. Please note the gaps in the dates and if the date you want falls within these you will need to check Ancestry, FreeBMD, Find My Past or contact your local GRO or Record Office.

At the time of writing, all public libraries are closed due to the Covid-19 outbreak.)

Dangers Of A Stolen Birth Certificate: How To Protect Yourself

So if you want to research your ancestors using GRO indexes or want to search historical figures anywhere in England and Wales for educational purposes or most importantly need a copy of a birth or death certificate for a family member, GRO. Website is an ideal starting point. The beauty of this website is that once you have found the reference, the data will connect you to the facility to order certificates. Searching the index is free, but there is a fee to request a copy of a birth, death or marriage certificate.

• You are not asked to register your card payment details. This is good if you just want to use the index search facility. If you go on to request a certificate after finding the index record, you only enter your card details.

• Click on the link titled “Search the GRO Online Index”. This link will take you to a nice and simple form (see image below) where you enter the details you know about the person you want. Like all online search facilities, you will learn as you go. In this section of the form you can try to include some or most of the data you have. You can even leave some boxes blank to get the desired result. The form displayed on the search page is, I must say, very simple.

• For those new to the subject of GRO Index References and the certificate ordering process, there is a PDF document titled “GRO Index Reference Number” and another document titled “Overview of GRO Online Historical Birth and Death Indexes”. Both documents provide a clear and concise understanding of the subject of GRO indices. These documents can be found in the “Frequently Asked Questions” link on the right side of the website.

I decided to use the website to look up Birmingham’s beloved mayor, statesman and businessman, Joseph Chamberlain. Joseph Chamberlain was born on 8 July 1836 in London, so there is no GRO birth index. There may be a baptism record through Ancestry or a local archives center, but the GRO birth and death records, as well as the marriage records, all start from July 1837. Joseph Chamberlain’s death would have been recorded in the GRO.

How To Know If A Birth Certificate Is Official?

In my search I put the following data into the search boxes – “I selected death for the first question, the second question asks “When was the death recorded” to which I typed 1914 followed by 0. If I’m not sure was over the year of death then I could enter 1914 plus a year or two to widen my search. I then entered the last name Chamberlain, the first name Joseph, the gender as male and the age at death which was 76. I then entered the county of death simply as Birmingham. I could have missed the age if I wanted to. Then I clicked the search button and – hey presto! The result for a man who died over a hundred years ago, is shown at the bottom of the form. Only one result is displayed, which saves me time to find out which result is what I’m looking for. Now I can click on the result and decide if I want a copy of the original certificate, a PDF version or even one Order MSF (Multi Lingual Standard Form) plus a certificate. If I put in minimal information like just a last name and maybe a year, then I might have results for up to 250 index entries that I have to figure out which one is for me. Even if I enter some data in the wrong field or enter a slightly different last name, I would get a message zero results!

I then continued to search for William Francis Aston using the birth index. William Francis Aston, a Nobel Prize winning physicist and chemist, was born in Harborne, Birmingham. William was born on September 1, 1877. I entered the most important details on the form. In the “Birth District” section I tried Birmingham first and got no results. I then entered Harborne and again – no result. Harborne was then a sub-district of the Kings Norton registration district, so I put in Kings Norton and voila – we have the result. Ahh – the joy of history!
