Let’s start with the basics. Plugins are software elements used by web browsers, often to display certain types of content, such as Flash or Java. Sometimes they are part of the operating system, but sometimes you have to add them when you install certain types of software. When it comes to plugins, it can be difficult to figure out what you have installed or what version you have.
Adobe’s Flash Player has long been one of the most popular plugins, used as a cross-platform tool to provide what is called “active content”, meaning it adds additional functionality to web pages for interactive or media functionality. Although Flash Player is due to be retired this year and other technologies such as HTML5 are used to deliver the same type of content, you may still need to use Flash Player to view certain web pages.

Media designed to be viewed with Flash Player or other platforms can be embedded in web pages and are accessible to users on all operating systems, making this software a popular attack vector for malware writers. For example, it has been known for some time that Java is not particularly secure, but Flash was so problematic that Apple stopped providing it with macOS. Steve Jobs wrote an open letter about Flash in 2010, and that, along with the rise of iOS, which couldn’t run Flash Player, contributed to its planned demise.
Flash is not included on iOS, partly because of the security flaws, but also due to performance issues; Flash Player would drain your iPhone or iPad battery too quickly. Although this has helped reduce the opportunities for malware creators to attack iOS devices, some websites still use Flash and users are often prompted to update their software.
Sometimes there may be multiple updates to Flash Player in the same month. Adobe informs Flash users of new available updates by displaying a dialog box. But when you see this type of dialog, how do you know if the Flash update is valid or if it’s an attempt to install malware on your Mac?

You can also control Safari by going to Safari > Preferences and then Websites. At the bottom of the left column you will see plugins; Adobe Flash Player will be displayed with the version number if it is installed.
