Details: The Add and Subtract Denominators Contrast lesson plan includes three pages of content. The lesson begins by saying that in order to add or subtract fractions, you must have a common denominator (the same denominator). The lowest digit of the fraction is called the denominator. The lesson shows examples of common and opposite (different) denominators. To find the common denominator, you need to find the lowest common denominator.

For example, for the problem 2/3 + 1/9, we first need to find the least common multiple of 3 and 9. Multiples of 3 are 3, 6, 9, and multiples of 9 start at 9. Therefore it is the least common set. 9. Then you must multiply both the numerator and the denominator in the first part by 3 to create a common denominator, since 3 x 3 = 9 (the new denominator). The original fraction is 2/3, so the new fraction is 6/9 (2 x 3 = 6 and 3 x 3 = 9). Then you can easily connect the parts. 6/9 + 1/9 = 7/9.

The next lesson shows another example of addition and subtraction that uses the same process. It then shows an example involving a mixed number. For mixed numbers, you must first convert the mixed number to an improper fraction. You solve it again using the same method! Your final answer can either be written as an improper fraction, or you can change it back to a mixed number.
